Color and Fashion Trends final report
Introduction
At the beginning, we have chosen some of the famous brand to do the research on it and try to analysis the main color or color pattern used for those brands, including Givenchy, Bottega Veneta, Valentino, etc. We divided ourselves for each brand and tried to have a brief application and analysis on them and finally we have chosen to us Bottega Veneta (BV) as our choice as the brand’s image is very obvious and it was centralized in Ready-to-wear division, also it is now expanding and become more famous even with its anti-bling nature which implied that the brand do very well in the design aspects including coloring.
Background
BV is the leader in luxury fashion best known for its signature leather goods. Founded in the early 1960's, Bottega Veneta is a manufacturer of consumer goods, producing primarily men's and women's ready-to-wear clothing, small leather goods, and exclusive home items.
As mentioned before, BV is a brand that is elegant with high quality, the color and style of design is very simple but matched flawlessly. This steady brand use color in a safety way and use very few sharp and outstanding colors even only have a glance on its collection.
Analysis based on the Creative Director (Tomas Maier)
It was once declined at around 2001 and British newcomer Giles Deacon helped a lot to regain the status of the brand and later an appointment to Tomas Maier brought BV to a climax.
Firstly, starting from analysis his personality, he hates labels and so on his design, there will not be any sharp logo on it. For him, symmetric and balance is taken into a great concern as inference from his name – he dropped “h” from his original name to make his first and last name more symmetrical. This characteristic may affect the color used for his collections. Also, he emphasis on unique characteristics with abhorring the banality of must-have so for his design, he makes very good use of simple cutting with mainly pure and low value color.
Not only the nurture factors, for his nature factor of being a Germany, his characteristics include conscientious and careful that would minimize the risk of using frivolous colors what other designer, like John Galliano or Valentino, who use red or acid green frequently. He keeps the main theorem of low key together with paying more attention to the texture.
Analysis on color
The analysis is divided into spring-summer (S/S) and fall-winter (F/W) collection as to have a more comprehensive analysis since F/W collection will usually use more dark color. Details of every aspect can be founded in the web blog.
1) Color chart and color proportion
Color chart refers to the color used and the number of color used in the collection. For the S/S collections, we analysis on 05-09, from the research, in 2004, it uses 9 colors; comparing with the other 4 years which use around 5-6 hues with different value included, the number of color used are comparably more than usual. The proportions of colors used are mostly on brown, black, grey, blue and relatively less red than the F/W collections.
For the F/W collections, we analysis on 04-08, from the research, the hues used are quite stable of 6-8 with different values too. The proportions of colors used are mostly on brown, red, yellow, orange and white with relatively blue than S/S collections.
In all of the colors BV had used, yellow-orange (especially colors near brown) appears in all season’s collections, but they are not exactly the same as they have different values or saturation. Colors like Tan, sienna or saddle brown are some examples.
2. Color theory
For the color theory, we also based on 5 years record. From 05S/S to 09S/S, BV use analogous color schemes the most and usually with primary color involved plus extra color like white and grey.
For 04F/W to 08F/W, BV use adjacent complementary and analogous color schemes the most. And for the F/W collection, extra colors are added too also with black appeared quite often.
Therefore, BV usually use comparatively more aggressive color (like yellow-orange) and use not only one color theory, she usually uses 2 theories plus an extra color or a theory with an extra color or strictly 2 theories. And all seasons will include one to two colors from black, grey or white. Also, the proportion of pattern used is very few, so pure color for each garments mainly.
3) The mood
Mood is very abstract but I think that BV wants to create an elegant with high quality. Although Tomas may not want to commercialize his products, for the reality, he only can do is to take a balance.
Based on Helson-Lansford’s study, men prefer blue, violet, green and women prefer red, orange, and yellow. Tomas put a good effort to apply BV’s aim but still feed the taste of the customers. Therefore, BV collections use a lot of red, orange for women and blue or blue-green for men.
4) Color meaning
As mentioned before, brown, black, grey, blue and red use often, so based on the meaning of colors we may find some clues why those colors are being chosen.
(Reference:
Brown: earth, home, reliability, comfort, endurance, stability, simplicity, comfort
Black: elegance, sexuality, formality, style, sophistication
Red: passion, desire, energy, love, all things intense and passionate
(Burgundy: Vigor, elegance, richness, refinement)
Grey: reliability, staid, modesty, dignity
Blue: tranquility, harmony, trust, security, cleanliness, loyalty)
BV’s image is to give quality, so reliability and simplicity fit her a lot together with elegant. There is no doubt that the colors above are used a lot as those characteristic of reflection they give people.
5) Leather goods (Bags) analysis
Since BV is first best known for its signature leather goods which bags are the most important items for the brand, color used for the bags match the color use in the out-fits oftenly. And from the bag analysis, brown, beige, pale-violet-red, tan which is the original leather color or colors with very low value or very high value are used.
For the outfit, it’s true that low and high value used more than exactly the color of the hue. Also, colors in range of color wheel are usually at between red to yellow.
Inspiration and Culture
Inspiration and Culture also affect the colors chosen however not the major factors affecting the color chosen. Examples like in 06S/S, the color numbers are more than common, and we think that it may be related to the inspiration of Mexicana as the mexico election was held that year. And some extra color (e.g. green) added together with the main color stays.
Summarization
To conclude, for the 2009F/W, I predict BV will still use more aggressive color as it often does and use around 8 colors as inferred from the sequence of 6-7-8-6-7 from 04-08. Also, for the color theory, adjacent complementary color scheme with 3-hue format with black and grey are included.
I use The Kindom of Cambodia as my inspiration as the insufficient amount of wood put a great concern to the global and Cambodia is one of the latest country to supply trees to other countries affecting the global issue. And for the main color I use black, liver, dark salmon, air-force blue, raw umber and sienna as the color family as they brown especially is the main color to maintain the image of brand and also the color is related to Cambodia.
I learnt a lot in this project as I really need to analysis from different aspects in order to predict and it is really useful as application can really work. Now, I can say I am more conscious about colors around me.

a book by jamie shovlin
I've read a book called A DREAM DEFERRED from jamie shovlin these days and I was first attracted by the photos inside at first.
There is a photo called DYCRASIA ( a word from Greek -- 'Dyskrasia', meaning bad mixture).
It is very interesting as it is from a survey of 'America's Favorite Colors'. When listing the personality types of people who choose specific color, then it connects to the basic four humour theory(which is a basis for personality analysis).

subscription from the book:
a meaningful color wheel.

philips' product
I was reminded by a magazine which introduce Philips lighting product-- LivingColors.
The brand Philips knows very about the relationship between mood and color and invent light that can change colors with different mood. As painting on wall cannot always be done to change the whole feel of the house, lighting with different colors can eventually help a lot.
And this remind me the Drag and Draw system that Robet has introduced in class and I think it is really a great ideas for the children to draw on the wall.

Drag and Draw is a set of digital drawing tools. It consists of a multicolor ‘Brush’, an ‘Eraser’, and a ‘Magic Wand’ to bring their drawings to life and a ‘Bucket’ to project the virtual drawings onto the wall.
On the other hand, there is still another light(from my memory) that whenever you put any things with color towards the light, the light will eventually change to that color. Philips trys its best to develop and enhance the quality of life of human being and from my point of view, it is very successful to do so and I hope to see the work to go on. :]
